302 V8 Install Kit

New MGB 302 V8 Kit

This kit will now enable you to bolt in a Small Block Ford 302 / 5.0 Liter V8 into your Rubber Bumper MGB (1974.5 – 80) with minimal modifications or 1962 -1974 Chrome bumper MGB (once the firewall modifications are completed) and close the stock bonnet/hood without a hood scoop or power bulge!

Merv Hagen's 1966 MGB V8 with new Boss 302 - 36

  • MG RV8 Style headers, Gaskets & Header Bolts
  • Remote Oil Filter Adapter
  • Oil Filter Bracket

  • Installation Hardware pack (Bolts, nuts, etc.)
  • Comprehensive kit Installation guide and recommendations

Parts will arrive painted in Chassis Black, unless otherwise requested, with powdercoat options also available at extra cost.

MGB 302 V8 Kit 1

The kit works by using stock RB crossmembers as cores, so a core charge is added to the kit price, until a good, useable core is shipped back to me.

The RB crossmembers ship as shown in the pictures. You will have to remove all suspension components and brakes, and install back onto the modified crossmember.

Besides, it’s a great excuse to install new bushings, upgrade brakes, etc...

MGB 302 V8 Kit 2

This kit above has the optional "Jet Hot" coating on the headers.

The engine mount plates & transmission mount are adjustable. This will enable the installer to overcome MG manufacturing differences & Ford 302 engine revisions, as this great engine has been manufactured in various forms for nearly 50 years. (e.g. harmonic balancer clearance near the steering rack.) The kit is primarily designed around the 1987-1993 Ford Mustang 5.0 V8 with manual transmission drivetrain i.e. Fox body oil pan, T5 5 speed, etc.

Kit price is only $1995 plus shipping & core charge.

(Front crossmember core charge is $250- this will be refunded when a good, clean core is shipped back). It is highly recommended that you find a core or use your existing front crossmember, as cores are not always available.

Many additional options are available on parts and accessories. e.g. Ceramic Coated headers, complete engine packages, etc…

302 V8 Kit FAQs

Can my MGB handle the power increase?

Yes, as long as your MGB has a good & solid rust-free body.

How much power does the Ford 302/5.0 make?

Power really depends on your parts list. The average 302 with a good set of Aluminum heads and street cam will make 300 HP easily, with some crate engines making over 500HP on pump gas. Have a look at these great links:

How heavy is the 302 in comparison to the stock B engine?

The stock B series MGB engine weighs in at 360lbs. A stock SBF 302/5.0 with Aluminum heads & intake installed weighs in close to 411lbs. So only an increase of 51lbs.

What modifications do I need to do to install the 302 V8?

(All modifications are covered in detail in the install guide.)

For a 77-80 MGB, 3 main areas will need to be ‘adjusted’. The kit uses MGRV8 style headers, which means the inner fenders will need small cutouts (basic template photos are provided). You will need to dimple metal slightly in the driver side footwell and possibly the trans tunnel slightly at the top. The last area is next to the stock driver side engine mount. This will need to be dimpled also to help accommodate the remote oil filter adapter.

For the 74.5 – 76 MGB, per above, plus the radiator supports will need to be moved forward and the radiator lower panel shortened as per the 77-80 MGB. Depending on radiator choice/style the lower rad panel may need to be shortened slightly on the 77-80 also.

For 1968-74 Chrome bumper cars, in addition to the above, the firewall will need to be modified to be similar in dimensions to the later 1974.5 -80 MGB’s. 1962-1967 has a slightly smaller transmission tunnel, which might need tweaking slightly in addition to the above.

Can I buy a complete install package, including engine, transmission, driveshaft, radiator etc.?

Yes, we can supply everything you will need to make your 302 V8 install a reality, please contact us for a tailor-made install package.

How easy is it to make upgrades to the 302?

The aftermarket support for these great engines is huge. Parts can be purchased from us or your local parts store, plus many internet mail order chains like Summit Racing Equipment are available to suit your needs.

May I purchase kit parts separately?

Yes. Kit parts may be purchased individually, but it works out slightly cheaper to purchase them as a complete kit.
